Guide to Tromsø ("the App") is developed and operated by Naturguiden AS (Org. no. 932 891 956 MVA), Norway. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how it is used, and your rights under GDPR.
We do not sell your data. We do not use advertising. We do not use cross-app tracking.
Location data
Location permission is used to show current aurora conditions, weather, best viewing spots, and nearby places relevant to your position. Your location is processed in real time on your device and is never transmitted to or stored on our servers. You can disable location services at any time in your device settings.
Aurora sightings
When you share an aurora sighting, the following data is uploaded to Firebase (Google Cloud, EU):
- Your photo (with all EXIF metadata such as GPS, timestamps, and device information stripped before upload)
- The photo's original GPS coordinates and timestamp (read from EXIF before stripping)
- Your self-rated aurora strength (strong, moderate, or weak)
- An optional signature or Instagram handle
Photos are visible on the map for up to 3 hours and in the aurora gallery for up to 90 days. After 90 days, photos and associated data are automatically and permanently deleted.
You can report inappropriate content directly from within the app. Reported photos are reviewed by our moderation team and removed if they violate our terms.
Push notifications
If you enable notifications, we store your push token and threshold preferences (Kp, Bz, cloud cover) to deliver aurora alerts. Push tokens do not identify you personally. You can disable notifications from within the app or in your device settings at any time.
Contact forms
Messages sent via the in-app contact or feedback forms are forwarded directly to our team via email. They are not stored in the app or on our servers beyond email delivery.
Third-party services
The App integrates with the following third-party services:
- Firebase (Google Cloud, EU) — sightings and notification data storage
- MET Norway — weather forecast data
- NOAA — real-time space weather and solar wind data
- Google Places — our curated place recommendations were originally sourced from Google Places. This data is stored and served by us; the App does not call the Google Places API live
- Mapbox — map rendering
- flokr.events — event listings
- Bokun — tour and activity listings
Each service has its own privacy policy. We only share the minimum data required for the feature to work.
Your rights (GDPR)
You have the right to:
- Access the personal data we hold about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Object to processing or request restriction
- Data portability
- Lodge a complaint with the Norwegian Data Protection Authority (Datatilsynet)
To exercise these rights, contact us at contact@naturguiden.no. We respond within 30 days.
Children
The App is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the most recent revision. Material changes will be communicated in the App.
