Guide to Tromsø ("the App") is a companion tool for aurora hunting and exploring Northern Norway, operated by Naturguiden AS (Org. no. 932 891 956 MVA), Norway. This page explains the limits of the forecast data we show, and what that means for how you should use it.

Forecasts are estimates, not guarantees

The Kp-index, Bz/IMF readings, solar wind speed, hemispheric power, and the aurora oval shown in the App are model outputs and live measurements from third-party space weather agencies, described in more detail below. They indicate probability and intensity, not certainty. The aurora is a natural phenomenon that can appear, strengthen, weaken, or fail to appear in ways that differ from any forecast — sometimes within minutes.

Cloud cover, light pollution, moon phase, your exact viewing location, and pure timing all affect whether you personally see anything, on top of whatever the space weather data says. A "favorable" reading in the App is a nudge to go outside and look, not a promise of a sighting.

Data sources

Space weather data (Kp-index, Bz, solar wind, hemispheric power, and the OVATION aurora model) is sourced from the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center. Weather forecasts (cloud cover, temperature) are sourced from MET Norway. Tour and activity listings are sourced from operators via Bokun. We do not control these sources, cannot guarantee their uptime or accuracy, and are not responsible for errors, delays, or omissions in the data they provide.

No liability for travel decisions

Some aurora hunters travel significant distances — including toward the Finnish or Swedish border — chasing better conditions or clearer skies. Any decision to travel, and any cost, time, or inconvenience that results from it, is made entirely at your own discretion and own risk. Naturguiden AS accepts no liability and offers no refunds, compensation, or claims of any kind if conditions do not match the forecast, if you do not see the aurora, or if a tour, booking, or trip does not go as expected.

Your own safety

Aurora hunting typically means being outdoors, often at night, in remote areas, and in cold Arctic conditions — sometimes involving driving on unfamiliar roads. You are responsible for assessing weather, road, and personal safety conditions yourself before heading out, and for dressing and preparing appropriately. Naturguiden AS is not liable for any injury, loss, or damage arising from your use of the information in the App.

Accuracy of the App itself

We do our best to keep the App's data current and correctly displayed, but the App and its content are provided "as is," without warranty of any kind, express or implied. Technical errors, display bugs, or delays in fetching live data can occur. If you spot something that looks wrong, we'd genuinely like to know — please report it via the feedback form in the App or by email.
